Lithium (LiFePO4) 25.6V 200Ah Smart-a Battery

Lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP) is one of the safest and most efficient types of lithium-ion batteries. Below are key reasons why LFP is the preferred choice for various applications.

Safety

LFP batteries are the safest among the mainstream lithium-ion battery types, with a nominal voltage of 3.2V per cell (compared to 2V per cell for lead-acid batteries).

  • A 12.8V LFP battery is composed of 4 cells connected in series.
  • A 25.6V LFP battery consists of 8 cells connected in series.

Ruggedness and Durability

LFP batteries are more durable and less prone to failure compared to lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries fail prematurely due to sulfation, especially under these conditions:

  • Operating in deficit mode (rarely or never fully charged).
  • Being left partially charged or fully discharged for extended periods (e.g., during winter storage in yachts or mobile homes).

Unlike lead-acid batteries, LFP batteries:

  • Do not require full charge cycles to maintain health.
  • Experience better service life even when kept partially charged.
  • Offer advantages like a wide operating temperature range, excellent cycling performance, low internal resistance, and high efficiency.

These traits make LFP batteries ideal for demanding applications.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is crucial in many applications, such as off-grid solar or wind systems. Here's how LFP compares to lead-acid batteries:

  • Lead-acid batteries have a round-trip energy efficiency of 80% (from 100% to 0% and back to 100%).
  • LFP batteries achieve a round-trip efficiency of 92%.

Lead-acid batteries become especially inefficient once they reach 80% charge, with efficiencies dropping to 50% or less in systems that require extended reserve energy. In contrast, LFP batteries maintain around 90% efficiency even under shallow discharge conditions (operating between 70% to 100% charge).

Cost

While LFP batteries are more expensive upfront than lead-acid batteries, their long service life, reliability, and energy efficiency offset the initial cost. Over time, LFP batteries provide better value, especially in demanding applications.

Bluetooth Monitoring

LFP batteries can be equipped with Bluetooth technology, enabling remote monitoring of:

  • Cell voltages
  • Temperature
  • Alarm status

This feature is valuable for detecting potential issues, such as cell imbalance.

Required Battery Management Systems (BMS)

For optimal performance and safety, LFP batteries require a compatible Battery Management System (BMS). Recommended BMS options include:

  • VE.Bus BMS – Ideal for systems with inverter/chargers.
  • smallBMS (formerly MiniBMS) – Best for small systems.
  • Battery Management System BMS 12/200 – Suitable for automotive and marine systems with DC loads and alternators.
  • Smart BMS CL 12/100 – Ideal for automotive and marine systems with DC loads and alternators.
  • Lynx Smart BMS – Recommended for large systems.

By selecting the appropriate BMS, you ensure efficient and reliable operation of your LFP battery system.

Marty and Leslie use Victron Energy equipment to power their off-grid house and a 3-phase system for a lumber equipment business. He has lots of solar energy and will use excess power to heat underground water-fed pipes in his greenhouses to grow fruit and vegetables year-round. Not your average homesteaders, Marty and Leslie show what's possible to do with Victron equipment and a lot of hard work!
